The ministry said 138 personnel, five vehicles and five aircraft are currently taking part in the rescue effort. Russian aircraft made a total of 21 flights to ferry aid in from third countries.

"As of January 20, nine people have been pulled out of the rubble (including two children), searches were conducted in 230 houses, three schools and a university, totaling an area of 80 square km," a statement issued by the ministry reads.

Doctors working in the emergency clinic which was flown into the quake-stricken country on one of the first Russian aid planes have provided medical assistance to 271 Haitians and carried out 67 surgeries.

An emergencies ministry spokeswoman, Yelena Chernova, said an additional team of 12 Russian doctors was sent to Haiti on Thursday.
